"Light and Shadow" Graphic Novel Review

Updated: Jul 22, 2023

Title: Light and Shadow

Author: (Original Novel) Ryu Hyang, (Comic) Hee Won

Genre: Fantasy, Romance

Graphic Novel

Rating: 3/5 stars

This story felt... rushed.

I don't know if it was just the graphic novel or if the original story was that way. There is another graphic novel out that is based on the book, perhaps that one will be different. Since I liked the basic premise, I may read it some day.

But, for a love story, it didn't feel like there was much romance. Even more, the love that was there felt artificial because it wasn't allowed time to grow. It didn't make sense to me that she would have fallen in love with him in the setting and experiences they had. I also never grew to like the male lead so I never got into the love story partly for that reason.

I did like the female lead's back story. She was strong, smart, and courageous when it really counted. Basically, when I read this, I thought the basic outline for the story was good, but it went too fast and didn't feel well-executed. In terms of viewing it from a Christian perspective, it was a little harsh in some areas. By harsh, I mean it was realistic in a lot of ways about the darker sides of humanity, if you tend to be more sensitive or like lighter reads, this may not be the story for you.
