Looking at Life with Joy

It is icy, cold, and snowy. The weather the last couple weeks has been quite unpleasant, sleet, snow, freezing weather. From driving down the road to simply walking on the sidewalk and slipping, I haven't been thrilled about nature lately.

My son, on the other hand, has been quite excited and gone outside several times. He keeps saying, "I want to go outside," and "Snow!" When I see the joy on his little face romping through the snow, leaving footprints, enjoying the crunch beneath his shoes, and collecting makeshift snowballs, I remember that same joy I felt about snow as a child.

Sure, as a kid we don't have to drive, and we hope for snow day to avoid school. But I can't help but wonder, do we sometimes get so busy being responsible and loaded down with what we are trying to accomplish as adults, we forget the simple, beautiful things in the world? Snow is still lovely, the way the sun glistens off it, the way your breaths curls into a cool fog in front of you, the way it crunches beneath your feet.

My husband woke me up the other morning as the snow began to melt to watch the sunrise as it hit the ice crystals on the trees. It was breath-taking. If I was more awake I probably would have snapped a picture of it, as it was though, I instead grumbled the whole time getting out of bed and glared at the sight with sleepy eyes for a few moments before heading back to my cozy blanket. But I remember it, and I appreciate that my husband took the time to remind me to take a moment to view the world in wonderment again.

We may be adults, but we've never seen it all. And even if you have seen it all, despite the fact life can get hard, let's remember that doesn't mean it has to be ugly. Each day is a new one, let's live it.
